Arne Slot expressed his gratitude to former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for the legacy he has left at the club as he celebrated clinching the Premier League title in his inaugural season at Anfield.
Liverpool secured the English championship with a commanding 5-1 victory over Tottenham on Sunday, rendering their closest rivals, Arsenal, unable to challenge them further.
The ex-Feyenoord boss got the crowd involved by singing along to Opus’ 1984 hit Live Is Life, substituting ‘Arne Slot’ into the lyrics for ‘Jurgen Klopp’.
Klopp had previously animated the Kop by chanting Slot’s name during his last match at Anfield.
Slot commended the German manager, who achieved both the Champions League and Premier League titles during his nine-year tenure, for establishing a robust foundation for him to expand upon.
“I believe that’s something no manager has accomplished previously. It certainly contributed to my success,” he remarked.
“Moreover, he greatly assisted me with the squad he left behind and the culture that exists within it.
“The players’ quality was evident to all. But it’s the culture of hard work—not just from the players, but also from the coaching staff—that has been remarkable.
“This is one of the reasons we’ve been able to achieve what we have this season.”
Slot described the experience of winning the Premier League, which ties Liverpool with Manchester United’s record of 20 top-flight titles, as “unreal.”
The Dutchman maintained his composure throughout the day until the team bus arrived at Anfield, where they were met by throngs of supporters.
“The sole moment of emotion for me today came upon our arrival at the stadium, witnessing the significance it held for the fans and these people,” he shared.
“Having the chance to win felt incredibly special, yet simultaneously, we understood we still had to see it through.
“I think everyone on that bus felt that with the fans rallying behind us, there was no way we could lose this match.”
“During the match and after, the level of support from the fans has been unbelievable, as has the performance of our players. It’s a privilege to be part of this day.”
