Inter Milan triumphed over a formidable Barcelona team to secure their place in the Champions League final on Tuesday night. Manager Simone Inzaghi, while praising the strength of his opponents, asserted that he wouldn’t trade his players for anyone else.
After an exhilarating 3-3 stalemate in the first leg, expectations were high for the return fixture at the San Siro. However, the match exceeded all excitement, culminating in a thrilling 4-3 victory for Inter after 120 minutes of intense football.
“Firstly, we must give credit to Barcelona, who are genuinely an impressive team,” Inzaghi remarked during an interview with Sky Sport.
“It required an incredible effort from Inter; hats off to these lads for delivering two monumental performances. I’m proud to be their coach; they poured everything into this match. It’s only fitting that they celebrate their success here tonight.”
At halftime, Inter held a two-goal advantage, but Barcelona mounted a remarkable comeback, threatening to snatch the victory. Just when it seemed they might, defender Francesco Acerbi equalised during injury time, leading to substitute Davide Frattesi scoring the decisive extra-time winner, igniting a passionate celebration among the home supporters.
“We faced challenges, yet we overcame every hurdle with determination,” Inzaghi noted.
“We played to win, relying on our strengths and qualities. After the first leg, we had our game plan in place, but without collective effort and sacrifice, success would have been unattainable.”
Inzaghi acknowledged the talent within Barcelona’s ranks, highlighting not just the 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, who garnered significant attention following his performance in the first leg, but also the exceptional midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
“There’s been much discussion about Yamal, but I was equally impressed by De Jong,” Inzaghi expressed. “He performed at Yamal’s level, winning nearly every loose ball. I wouldn’t swap my players for anyone in the world, though. I’ve seen many other strong talents beyond Yamal.”
Frattesi emerged as the hero at the San Siro, having also scored a crucial late goal in the quarter-finals against Bayern Munich that helped secure a 4-3 aggregate win.
“This is incredible; I’m at a loss for words,” he shared.
“After our match in Munich, I didn’t think I could experience those emotions again, but tonight was extraordinary.”
“I may not have been naturally gifted, but I have always been the last to give up and the first to believe. At 3-3, I was confident we would advance. Though I came off the bench, it felt as though I played the entire 120 minutes.”
