A significant number of AFL coaches feel undervalued and unrewarded, as highlighted by a recent survey.
The survey, which gathered insights from over 200 senior and assistant-level coaches, has raised serious concerns for the AFL Coaches Association regarding the prevalent dissatisfaction within the group.
It explored various aspects of job satisfaction, revealing a discouraging picture of their sentiments about their roles.
Tom Morris from 9News Melbourne noted that the primary issue is the dissatisfaction with their compensation. “The average salary for senior coaches in 2024 is reported to be $750,000, while assistant coaches earn around $183,000,” Morris stated.

“Despite these figures being significantly higher than the average Australian salary of $91,000, only seven per cent of those surveyed felt adequately compensated for their efforts.”
Moreover, there has been a concerning decline in satisfaction regarding work-life balance.
“Only 37 per cent of coaches believe they maintain an acceptable work-life balance, down from 60 per cent back in 2019,” Morris explained.
Additionally, some assistant coaches describe the environment as “cutthroat,” given the extensive hours and energy they invest.

“Three assistant coaches shared with me that they dedicate 60 hours a week for ten months of the year in this cutthroat environment,” he added.
Another grave concern is that numerous assistant coaches feel disrespected by the AFL despite their significant contributions to clubs and the league as a whole.
“Worryingly, only one in five indicated that they feel valued by the league,” Morris remarked.
“While senior coaches are well taken care of, there is a clear perception among assistant coaches that they are undervalued.”

“Especially in the wake of COVID, despite the industry as a whole reaping benefits, particularly the players.”
So, what steps can be taken to remedy this challenging situation?
Morris pointed out that the AFL Coaches Association is urgently advocating for a coordinated approach to enhance conditions. “The association believes these issues affect the appeal of coaching positions,” he emphasised.
