North Melbourne managed to edge out a determined Richmond side, securing a nail-biting victory by just four points on Sunday afternoon.
This triumph marks the Kangaroos’ first win at the MCG since 2017, finally breaking an eight-year streak of disappointment.
However, the match was not without its drama, as the Tigers rallied from a 24-point deficit to come within a whisker of snatching the win.
The Kangaroos will undoubtedly be relieved, particularly as Richmond holds their first-round draft pick for the upcoming draft.
A defeat to them would have carried an added sting.
Hugo Ralphsmith showcased some remarkable talent in the first half, executing a goal that drew comparisons to the legendary Peter Daicos from the commentators.
North Melbourne made their mark early, booting six goals to two in the opening quarter, yet managed only another six for the remainder of the match.
Richmond, on the other hand, struggled to find the decisive goal that would have tipped the scales in their favour, with Kane McAuliffe and Tim Taranto missing set shots that could have earned them the lead.
Fox Footy commentator Dermott Brereton was less than impressed with an umpiring blunder in the first half, after a smothered kick was ruled as having ‘insufficient intent’.
“Oh no – come on,” he remarked.
Cam Zurhaar was instrumental for North Melbourne, slotting four goals, while young midfielder George Wardlaw further cemented his reputation by laying down 10 tackles.
For Richmond, Seth Campbell netted three goals, while number one draft pick Sam Lalor added two, proving to be a constant threat. Captain Toby Nankervis was also outstanding, recording 13 tackles and winning 46 hit-outs.
Looking ahead, Richmond will prepare for the Dreamtime at the ‘G clash against Essendon, while North Melbourne gets ready to face Collingwood at Marvel Stadium.
