Sherida Spitse from the Netherlands has made history by breaking the European record for the most appearances in women’s football, celebrating her 241st match for her national team.
At the age of just 16, Spitse debuted for the Netherlands in August 2006 during a 4-0 defeat against England.
In 2019, she became the Netherlands’ all-time leading cap holder when she earned her 157th cap. She featured in the Netherlands’ UEFA Nations League clash against Austria on Tuesday evening, which ended in a 3-1 victory, marking her milestone 241st game.
With this achievement, she surpassed the previous record of 240 caps held by Swedish footballer Caroline Seger, who retired in 2023.
The Netherlands secured their victory with goals from Wieke Kaptein, Danielle van de Donk, and Vivianne Miedema, who plays for Manchester City. Miedema was substituted in during the 61st minute but had to leave the pitch with an injury in the 77th minute.
In the current UEFA Nations League standings, the Netherlands holds second place based on goal difference. Germany tops Group 1 of League A in the Nations League with 10 points and a goal difference of +12. The Netherlands also has 10 points but a goal difference of +5, while Austria and Scotland find themselves in third and fourth positions with 3 and 0 points, respectively.
