Rasmus Højlund has faced significant criticism in the English media after managing just two Premier League goals this season, but former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has stepped up to defend his fellow Dane.
Schmeichel emphasises that Højlund is not the sole player encountering difficulties at Manchester United.
“It has been tough for him, but I believe he is doing exceptionally well. He doesn’t give in, he battles on, and he refuses to let it affect him negatively,” Schmeichel commented to Danish media outlet BT ahead of the launch of a new documentary about his own life on Sky Showtime.
Having achieved great success during his eight-year tenure at Manchester United, Schmeichel understands what it takes to thrive at the club. He firmly believes that Rasmus Højlund will ultimately make his mark with the ‘Red Devils’.
“In my opinion, there’s no question that he is the future, and he is undoubtedly part of the plan,” Schmeichel stated, adding:
“He will gain valuable lessons from this season, which will provide him with the balance needed for the remainder of his career.”
Currently, United find themselves in 13th place in the Premier League, marking their lowest standing in over 30 years.
