Schalke 04’s manager, Kees van Wonderen, has signalled that he anticipates parting ways with the troubled club at the conclusion of the season, as he revealed to German media following Saturday’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Hamburger SV.
“I need to savour the upcoming matches,” Van Wonderen stated, as reported by Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and Bild on Saturday night.
Despite a lack of formal discussions regarding his future with the club’s management, Van Wonderen expressed his thoughts candidly: “It’s evident to me that I won’t be here after this season. The signals all point to that. If we were aligned, there would be a more constructive dialogue, but sadly, that isn’t the case,” he stated.
The Dutch manager, who took charge after Karel Geraerts in September, has a contract until July 2026, and emphasised his desire to remain with Schalke 04.

“But only if we are on the same wavelength. Everything doesn’t need to be perfect, but there should be commitment to our course—going left then right after a few matches doesn’t work. If that’s the case, then perhaps someone else should take over,” Van Wonderen remarked.
Voicing Discontent with the Management
When pressed about his criticisms, the coach clarified whom he was referring to within the club’s leadership, including a mention of chairman Matthias Tillmann.
“For example, it would be typical for someone like him (Tillmann) to stand beside you and acknowledge: These things happen. But we press on because our path is well-defined,” Van Wonderen noted. However, “Instead, silence fills the air, and the whispers indicate there are uncertainties. I find that quite disappointing and not beneficial. It’s quite a pity,” he expressed about the previous week’s 2-0 loss to Jahn Regensburg.
