England’s women’s team manager, Sarina Wiegman, voiced her disappointment on Thursday regarding Mary Earps’ unexpected retirement from international football, occurring just weeks ahead of Euro 2025.
The Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper was instrumental in England’s triumph at Euro 2022, which took place on home soil, and played a key role in reaching the World Cup final the following year.
Yet, in recent months, she faced fierce competition for the England number one spot from Chelsea’s Hannah Hampton before deciding to step away from the international stage on Tuesday.
“Naturally, that’s difficult, but I prefer to channel my feelings into disappointment,” Wiegman remarked when questioned about her thoughts on the timing of Earps’ announcement.
“I’m genuinely disappointed and saddened by her absence from the team. I wanted her with us.”
“She has performed exceptionally well for England. Her impact has been tremendous, and we’ve shared an incredible journey.”
“I hold that dearly, which is why I feel this disappointment.”
Lionesses captain Leah Williamson expressed her own feelings of devastation over Earps’ decision, especially after years spent together on the international stage.
“She’s one of my closest friends within football; we’ve shared so much on this journey, so I’m heartbroken because I love her,” said the Arsenal defender.
“The way she represents England is truly commendable.”
“It’s sad that we won’t be creating any more memories together in an England shirt.”
“But if she believes this is the right choice for her, I will support her wholeheartedly.”
England will take on Portugal at Wembley on Friday before heading to face the reigning world champions, Spain, on Tuesday for their final Nations League group matches, where a spot in the semi-finals is on the line.
Wiegman’s squad will then prepare to defend their Euro title, facing France, the Netherlands, and Wales during the group stages, which kick off on July 2nd in Switzerland.
