Sandro Tonali is determined to return to the Champions League as he plays a pivotal role in Newcastle’s quest to secure a place among the elite of European club football.
The 24-year-old Italian midfielder delivered a stunning winner from a tight angle, clinching a 2-1 victory against Brentford at St James’ Park on Wednesday. This result leaves the Magpies just one point behind fourth-placed Manchester City, with a game in hand.
A fifth-place finish could still see them through to the Champions League.
Tonali made the switch to Newcastle from AC Milan for £55 million in July 2023, shortly before the club’s last appearance in European competitions.
“I’m delighted for the team and thrilled with this win,” Tonali commented.
“These three points are crucial for our return to the Champions League. It’s a significant victory for us, and we must win all our games at St James’ Park.”
“Our aim is to finish among the top five for the Champions League. It’s a bit challenging, but we’re fortunate because five teams qualify this season.”
“The team is feeling a bit more liberated now, which is great for both me and the fans. We have nine finals left to make our way back to the Champions League.”
Having returned from a 10-month suspension for breaching betting regulations during his stint at Milan, Tonali has steadily become a crucial player in the squad that lifted the League Cup last month, ending Newcastle’s 56-year wait for a major trophy.
“It has been a tough season,” he reflected. “But I’m now happy to be back, feeling free and revitalised. I see myself as a new player, eager to contribute to this team and support my teammates.”
“The players are incredible, and so are the fans. Everyone in Newcastle is enjoying this, and we will give our all for this city.”
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has expressed his delight at Tonali’s development as a skillful, ball-playing holding midfielder.
“Technically, he is an exceptional player,” Howe stated.
“What I love about Sandro is that he generally avoids trying to do complex things. The goal he scored against Brentford was incredibly challenging, yet in general play, he consistently makes good decisions and keeps the game simple.
“He’s an incredibly clever player, skilled with both feet, and shows remarkable intelligence on the pitch.”
