Sampdoria have achieved a remarkable escape as Serie B officials awarded them a 3-0 victory over Salernitana on Monday, following the abandonment of the second leg of the relegation play-off, thus ensuring their place in Italy’s second division for another season.
The clash at Salernitana was brought to a halt on Sunday after home supporters hurled smoke bombs and seating onto the pitch, leading a Serie B sports judge to declare Sampdoria the winners.
With an aggregate score of 5-0 following their win in the first leg, Sampdoria have confirmed their remarkable escape from what seemed to be inevitable relegation to the third tier just a month ago.
The Genoa-based club found themselves relegated to Serie C for the first time in their 78-year history back in May. However, after Brescia faced a points deduction due to financial mismanagement, they were elevated back above Sampdoria.
Conversely, Salernitana’s season concluded on a disappointing note, as the Salerno club has also been mandated to play two home games behind closed doors, resulting in their second consecutive relegation in as many seasons.
