Mohamed Salah has expressed his determination to bring Premier League glory to Liverpool this season following the signing of a new two-year contract on Friday.
The 32-year-old Egyptian has remained focused amid lengthy speculation regarding his future, netting 27 goals and providing 17 assists in 31 league matches, helping the Reds establish an 11-point lead at the summit of the table with just seven matches remaining.
Salah was part of the Liverpool team that clinched their first league title in 30 years during the 2019/20 season.
However, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the trophy was lifted in an empty Anfield, and fans missed out on a celebratory parade through the city.
“At the start of the season, I mentioned that winning the Premier League is my top priority; I want it more than anything else,” Salah stated on Liverpool’s official website. “I have a tremendous desire to achieve it.”
“We owe this to our fans, who truly deserve to revel in such a moment after a long wait. Celebrating at Anfield and throughout the streets while enjoying our Premier League success is something we can’t wait for.”
Speaking about the prospect of winning the title in front of a full Anfield, he remarked: “This is what drives me every single day—to come to work, motivate myself, and inspire my teammates, especially as we are closer than ever to achieving it in a truly memorable way.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has also faced ongoing questions regarding the futures of captain Virgil van Dijk and right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, both of whom are set to be out of contract at the end of the season in his inaugural campaign as manager.
The Dutchman mentioned that Salah’s contract news might have come as a “pleasant surprise” to fans but praised the club’s sporting director Richard Hughes for his role in keeping the Egyptian star at Anfield.
“It might not be a surprise to me, as I’ve had an inkling about his contract situation throughout the season,” Slot said. “For the fans, it could be a lovely surprise. I was aware for a while that things were progressing positively.”
“It’s a significant achievement for Richard to secure Mo Salah’s extension. He’s a world-class talent who could choose to play for any club he desires, yet he chose to stay with us, which speaks volumes about Richard’s efforts.”
