Leicester City’s manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy, has stated that his future with the club needs to be clarified promptly as they begin to prepare for a return to the second-tier Championship.
A 1-0 defeat at home to the dominant Premier League side Liverpool has seen Leicester, sitting in 19th place, officially relegated on Sunday.
The former Manchester United forward took charge in late November following the departure of Steve Cooper but has faced challenges in reversing the club’s fortunes, having only secured two wins in his 20 Premier League matches.
The loss on Sunday marked their ninth consecutive home league defeat without finding the net—setting a new English league record.
“We need to utilise this time to improve,” the Dutchman expressed. “The club will move forward, and it’s my responsibility to position it as favourably as possible.”
When asked about the timeline for his future at the club, Van Nistelrooy replied: “I hope it will be soon. With the new season approaching, it’s vital that we start making preparations.”
“The sooner we get clarity, the better.”
Despite some positives in Leicester’s performance on Sunday, relegation has felt inevitable for quite some time.
“I’m really disappointed that it’s now a certainty. We kept fighting and hoping, but in recent weeks, we realised the gap was widening,” he admitted.
“We could see it coming, though we never gave in. We focused on the future, aiming to finish the season as strongly as we could.”
“The Championship will commence next season, and I’m committed to doing what’s best for the club. I’ll be working diligently in the coming weeks to prioritise Leicester City’s interests.”
“I’m awaiting clarification from the club on how they wish to proceed. My aim is to lead the club effectively.”
