Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii found himself surrounded by enthusiastic young fans during a post-match interview, leaving his mark as one of Super Rugby’s standout signings on Friday night.
In a nail-biting 37-36 win against the Highlanders, Suaalii’s debut for the Waratahs at fullback featured a few shaky moments, but his overall performance was undeniably impressive.
The Waratahs tactically directed numerous high kicks towards him, although it led to a particular mishap in the first half at Allianz Stadium.
Suaalii made a valiant jump but failed to secure the Gilbert ball, enabling the Highlanders to capitalise, with winger Caleb Tangitau seizing the opportunity to shift past Andrew Kellaway.
However, Suaalii electrified the crowd of 16,034 later in the first half with a sensational burst of speed.
A thrilling sight as he charged forward, but a pass intended for his teammate Joey Walton fell to the ground instead.

This incident netted the Waratahs three points instead of a possible seven.
Crucially, Suaalii consistently engaged in the game and delivered in critical moments, including a significant defensive effort.
A highlight of the night came towards the end when his dynamic surge set up fellow rising star Max Jorgensen for a try out wide.
“We’ve only been training together for four weeks, so a bit of rustiness was to be expected in the first half; we’ll review the second half,” Suaalii commented to Stan Sport.
“It was fantastic to see all the kids and supporters here. I reminisced about being a young fan myself, so signing autographs for the kids feels rewarding.”
Despite suffering knee soreness and missing out on the final pre-season game, Suaalii limped off towards the end of the match but assured everyone he was “all good” and “just a bit sore.”

The Waratahs will have a bye next week.
“He’s not just a brilliant player, but a wonderful person too,” commented Allana Ferguson on Stan Sport, highlighting Suaalii’s engagement with fans.
“He gives back to the community and is often the last to leave, embodying professionalism. He understands the importance of inspiring younger fans, knowing exactly what it’s like to be in their shoes.”

“I can’t see him moving on any time soon, which is fantastic for rugby,” she added.
Impressed by Suaalii’s impact, Waratahs and Wallabies legend Matt Burke remarked, “It doesn’t matter the gender or age; everyone knows who Joseph Suaalii is,” during the Stan Sport commentary.

“When he performs at that level, fans feel they’ve definitely got their money’s worth,” Burke remarked.
Waratahs coach Dan McKellar praised Suaalii’s work ethic, labelling his professionalism as “contagious.”
“His off-field persona is just as admirable; he connects wonderfully with children,” McKellar noted.
“He draws attention to the game, which is a positive aspect, and he handles it with remarkable grace. Coming from a supportive family has kept him grounded and humble – I can’t speak highly enough about him.”
At half-time, Burke, who had suggested Suaalii should consider playing at outside centre instead of fullback, urged for patience as the game progressed.
“We expect a lot from him due to what we know he’s capable of,” he emphasised.
“Right now, it’s crucial for him to settle into the role. He hasn’t played as a fullback in rugby since around year 10…”
