Ruben Amorim (40) stated on Thursday that Manchester United have the opportunity to transform a dismal season into a remarkable one, following their incredible comeback to defeat Lyon 5-4 and secure a 7-6 aggregate victory, earning a spot in the Europa League semi-finals.
With only six minutes left in extra time at Old Trafford and United trailing 4-2—even after Lyon was reduced to 10 men at 2-2—the team’s prospects appeared bleak.
A penalty from Bruno Fernandes ignited the revival, with goals from Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire leading to jubilant celebrations among the supporters.
Amorim acknowledged that he had seen a documentary on United’s legendary treble-winning season in 1999, where they rallied from 1-0 down in stoppage time to defeat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the Champions League final.
Despite a generally disappointing season that has left the English club sitting 14th in the Premier League, this latest European comeback will be etched in the memories of United fans.
“At this stadium, at this club, there’s always a sense that anything can happen, and today was just another example of that,” remarked Amorim.
“We acknowledge that we have not been performing to our potential and accept the criticism, but we still have the chance to make this season special.”
United’s next challenge will be against Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals, with Tottenham facing Norway’s Bodo/Glimt in the other match.
If United are unable to claim victory in the tournament, they will likely miss out on European competition entirely next season, a major financial setback for Amorim as he looks to reshape his squad during the transfer window.
Conversely, winning the trophy in Bilbao on May 21 would ensure United’s qualification for the lucrative Champions League next season.
“A single moment can significantly influence the players’ mindset,” Amorim added.
“We must concentrate on the Europa League and take certain risks with our younger players in the Premier League. It’s vital for our fans to understand that our focus needs to be on the Europa League.”
Mainoo is poised to make a considerable impact in the final weeks of the season after having impressed in a temporary role as a centre-forward coming off the bench.
Despite only making his second appearance since February due to injury, the England international displayed exceptional poise by scoring the equaliser.
He is hopeful that the thrilling comeback will motivate United to clinch the competition.
“The performance wasn’t our best, but a win like that can generate significant momentum,” said Mainoo.
“We’re building a snowball effect, and it can grow bigger and bigger. Hopefully, we can carry this all the way to the end.”
