Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, offered high praise for Mason Mount after the midfielder came off the bench to net a brace in the 4-1 victory over Athletic Bilbao on Thursday, securing their spot in the Europa League final.
Mount, who was introduced in the second half, equalised for United just 10 minutes after his arrival and added another goal in injury time, helping the team to a convincing 7-1 aggregate triumph and setting up a final clash against Tottenham Hotspur.
The English midfielder, who joined United in 2023, has faced a season marred by injuries, including a head injury in September that kept him out for over a month, followed by a muscle issue in December that sidelined him until March.
At 26, Mount scored his first Premier League goal of the season during Sunday’s dramatic 4-3 defeat at Brentford, and accomplished the feat of becoming the first United substitute to score twice in a European knockout match since David Beckham against Real Madrid in 2003.
“I’m absolutely delighted for him. He’s a fantastic player. He puts in a great effort and has so much quality,” Amorim expressed during his post-match press conference.
“When you witness someone like Mason working diligently every single day, maintaining a healthy diet, and taking ice baths, you just want to support him.
“He’s ideal for this role as he can play in midfield but also has the pace of a winger.”
Forward Rasmus Hojlund, who netted United’s third goal, remarked that Mount has worked tirelessly to bounce back from his injuries and did not merit the criticism directed at him.
“He’s received a fair bit of flak because of his injuries, but he’s remained positive, always trying to contribute and get fit,” he told TNT Sports.
“His only goal has been to return to the pitch and … replicate what he achieved today.”
United will face Spurs in the Europa League final on May 21st at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao, the home ground of Athletic.
