After the Roosters’ triumph against the Dolphins on Friday night, coach Trent Robinson had plenty to say about James Tedesco’s stellar performance.
As the interstate series draws near, Tedesco bolstered his chances of selection with a commanding display in the 36-26 win, racking up 253 metres and contributing to all four of the Roosters’ tries.
The 32-year-old is widely regarded as the form fullback in the NRL, but he will need to reclaim his spot from the current holder, Dylan Edwards.
While it’s common for coaches to support players in good form, Robinson went above and beyond during the post-match press conference, delivering a nearly uninterrupted four-minute tribute to Tedesco’s influence on the team.
With Tedesco seated next to him, Robinson acknowledged that he usually refrains from praising a player in close proximity, but felt Tedesco’s performance was worthy of the exception.
“I’m not quite sure what to say about Ted. I congratulated him on yet another classic performance; he’s an absolute joy to coach,” Robinson remarked.
“Watching him during the week, his preparation and the mentality he brings each day—then he steps onto the field… It’s incredibly rare to witness someone perform at this level consistently over many years. Coaches don’t typically express this about players beside them for fear it might change their mindset.
“However, I have no such concerns because I know who he is and how he prepares day in and day out; it’s just part of his routine. He’s an exceptional leader for our team.
“It’s truly an honour to coach him. I’ve been fortunate to work with some outstanding players, and Ted ranks among the best.”
“I can’t help but feel lucky to have the best seat in the house to watch him play. Words fail to capture how remarkable he is as a player and the dedication he puts into his preparation.”
“It’s not just his on-field performance that stands out; everyone can see that. But I get to witness the hard work behind the scenes.”
When asked if Tedesco deserves a spot in the NSW lineup, Robinson replied:
“Dylan Edwards is a phenomenal player. They’re all exceptional talents, and it ultimately comes down to the coach’s preference. You can’t go wrong with Ted and his accomplishments, nor can you with Dylan,” he stated.
“It’s purely the coach’s decision; there isn’t a right or wrong answer. It depends on what the coach believes is best for the team. While we can debate other positions, I don’t think fullback is one of them—it’s entirely up to the coach.”
Tedesco lost his place in the Blues and Kangaroos teams to Edwards in 2023. The Roosters captain mentioned that his approach this year hasn’t diverged much from previous ones.
“I don’t believe I’m performing any better; I’m simply more focused on why I play football and how I get ready each week,” he commented.
“While people might assume I could decline, I’m sticking to my weekly routine, mentally preparing for each match and ensuring my body is ready before stepping onto the field.”
