On Saturday, just 24 hours before the Nations League quarter-final second leg against Denmark, Cristiano Ronaldo responded to the news that Rasmus Hojlund had imitated his iconic celebration after scoring the winning goal for Denmark in the first leg in Copenhagen on Thursday.
“I have no issues with it. I understand it wasn’t meant to be disrespectful. It’s not just him who replicates my celebration globally.”
“I’m clever enough to grasp that. For me, it’s a privilege. I hope to replicate it in front of him tomorrow (Sunday, ed.). That would be great. I’m pleased that he appreciates my celebration. Tomorrow will be a different game. Denmark played significantly better than us on Thursday, but we’ve moved on and are looking ahead to the next match.”, Ronaldo told Danish media ahead of the match.
When asked about his celebration on Thursday, Hojlund explained:
“It was a tribute to my idol. It wasn’t about mocking him or anything like that. He has been incredibly significant to my football journey. It may seem a bit complicated, but to score against him and Portugal is massive.”
“I vividly remember him netting a free kick in 2009 when I was at the stadium watching the game, and I’ve been a huge Cristiano fan ever since,” said Rasmus Hojlund.
Denmark will take on Portugal in the second leg on Sunday evening.
