On Saturday, a day before the Nations League quarter-final’s return leg against Denmark, Cristiano Ronaldo responded to Rasmus Hojlund’s imitation of his iconic celebration after scoring the decisive goal for Denmark in the first leg on Thursday in Copenhagen.
“I don’t mind at all. I’m aware it wasn’t intended as a slight. It’s not just him who replicates my celebration globally.”
“I’m savvy enough to appreciate that. To me, it’s a privilege. I hope to replicate it in front of him tomorrow (Sunday, ed.). That would be fantastic. I’m pleased he admires my celebration. It will be a different match. Denmark outperformed us on Thursday, but we’ve moved on and are eager for the clash ahead,” Ronaldo shared with the Danish press ahead of the match.
In response to a question about his celebration, Hojlund explained:
“It’s for my idol. It wasn’t meant to mock him or anything of the sort. He has played an integral role in my football journey. While it might seem a bit complex, scoring against him and Portugal is monumental for me.”
“I distinctly recall him scoring a free-kick in 2009 when I was watching the game live at the stadium, and since then, I’ve been a massive fan of Cristiano,”
Rasmus Hojlund added.
Denmark will square off against Portugal in the second leg on Sunday evening.
