Roma extend their Serie A unbeaten streak with a resilient draw against fierce rivals Lazio

A remarkable goal from Matías Soulé in the second half secured a hard-earned 1-1 draw for AS Roma against their arch-rivals Lazio, allowing the Giallorossi to maintain an impressive unbeaten streak in Serie A (SA) that now stands at 16 matches (W11, D5).

Entering the 162nd edition of the Derby della Capitale, Lazio were aware that a solid start was essential, having managed just one victory in their previous six competitive matches.

Marco Baroni’s team quickly asserted themselves, with Alessio Romagnoli’s close-range header expertly denied by Mile Svilar, who tipped it over the bar.

Taking advantage of that early let-off, Roma gradually found their footing in the match, but soon found themselves relying on Svilar once more as the Serbian goalkeeper blocked a powerful angled shot from Gustav Isaksen.

As half-time approached, the hosts continued to search for the opening goal, with Isaksen being the player most likely to score, as he had another threatening attempt expertly saved by Svilar.

The early exchanges of the second half were dominated by Lazio, who made their pressure tell just two minutes after the restart when Luca Pellegrini’s well-placed free-kick was expertly headed in by former Roma defender Romagnoli.

Having enjoyed a five-match winning streak on the road, the Giallorossi sought to respond promptly, but Christos Mandas was resolute in the Lazio goal, pushing away a low header from Gianluca Mancini.

Refusing to be disheartened, Claudio Ranieri’s side found an equaliser in stunning style in the 69th minute, as Matías Soulé curled a brilliant 25-yard shot in off the crossbar, marking his fourth goal of the season.

This thrilling equaliser set the stage for an exciting finish at the Stadio Olimpico, with Svilar once again stepping up for Roma by deflecting Pedro’s shot from the edge of the penalty area behind for a corner.

Both teams pressed for a late winner as the match drew to a close, but the encounter ultimately ended in a stalemate, leaving Lazio three points off the top four.

For Roma, consecutive draws have somewhat hindered their momentum, but Ranieri’s squad continues to remain unbeaten in the league since mid-December.
