Anas Ouahim, midfielder for Sydney FC, has lauded the A-Leagues and Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) for their ongoing support of players who observe Ramadan, as in-game pauses for breaking fast have returned this season.
Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting adhered to by Muslims globally, commenced in late February and is a fundamental aspect of Islamic faith. During this period, Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise until sunset, and for professional athletes such as Ouahim, breaking their fast often aligns with evening matches at sunset.
This season, the A-Leagues will again offer assistance to players and match officials who are observing Ramadan with designated in-game stoppages, allowing Muslim participants to break their fast.
Initially rolled out in the 2023-24 A-League season through a collaboration with the PFA, this marks the second consecutive season that clubs can request a 90-second pause in play. This break occurs after sunset when the ball is out of play in a neutral area on the pitch.

If Ouahim starts in Sydney’s Saturday-night Isuzu UTE A-League match against Macarthur Bulls at Campbelltown Stadium, it will be the first opportunity during Ramadan for play to be halted, enabling the midfielder to break his fast.
In 2025, Ramadan will fall during Rounds 21 to 24 for the Isuzu UTE A-League Men and Rounds 17 to 21 for the Ninja A-League Women.

“Ramadan holds a significant place for me and for Muslims worldwide,” Ouahim shared. “It’s a period of self-discipline, gratitude, and introspection. We strive to maximise this time and deepen our connection with God.”
“It certainly presents challenges. Some professions demand more physically than others, and as a footballer, nourishment and hydration are essential for peak performance.”
“However, this isn’t my first experience, and I genuinely feel as if I receive strength from God—like He’s guiding me through it all.”
“It allows me to honour my faith while continuing to play the sport I cherish, and I’ve discovered a balance that suits me well.”

Ouahim emphasises that the A-Leagues’ Ramadan initiative is crucial for fostering inclusivity.
“It’s fundamentally about respect—acknowledging one another’s beliefs, backgrounds, and the importance of various practices,” he stated.
“Respect also entails providing players the necessary time and space to uphold their faith while still participating in football. It’s essential for these aspects to harmoniously coexist—you should be able to adhere to your religion and pursue what you are passionate about simultaneously.”
