Chelsea’s skipper Reece James believes that their triumph over Benfica highlighted the team’s growing maturity on Saturday.
The victory against Benfica, which unfolded during extra time, was marked by a nearly two-hour delay at the 85-minute mark caused by a thunderstorm.
Ultimately, Chelsea secured a 4-1 win in their round of 16 match of the Club World Cup, with James contributing to the scoreline.
The captain later remarked, “We’ve come a long way. It’s tough to be nearing the end of the match only to face a setback.”
“To regroup, stay focused, and net a few goals is a testament to how far we’ve progressed, and everyone played a vital role today.”
“It was a challenging match with numerous interruptions. The weather conditions weren’t ideal, the pitch was far from perfect, and it was tough to maintain our rhythm. We reached the 85-minute mark and then faced a lengthy suspension.”
“Cooling down and then having to reignite your performance takes a toll on the players, but we’re pleased to have gotten the result.”
Regarding his own goal, James explained: “As I approached, I spoke with the centre-backs and asked what they preferred. They mentioned a shot, cross, or in-swinger, and I said that was fine.
“When I got to the ball and noticed the keeper’s positioning, he was offering too much of the goal. I decided to take the shot, and it went in.”
