Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid is in doubt for the team’s opening match in the Club World Cup against Al-Hilal from Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. He missed training on Tuesday due to illness.
According to sources within the club, Mbappe woke up with a high fever. While he has not been officially ruled out, the source indicated that his participation at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium is now in “more than reasonable doubt.”
If Mbappe is unable to play, it poses a selection challenge for Real Madrid’s newly appointed manager, Xabi Alonso, as the French forward is currently the squad’s only recognised centre forward.
Brazilian prodigy Endrick, who might have offered an alternative, was not included in the travelling squad due to a leg muscle injury he picked up during Real’s LaLiga match against Sevilla last month.
Mbappe has been a key figure for Real Madrid this season, netting 31 goals in LaLiga since his high-profile transfer from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer.
Entering the tournament as one of the frontrunners, Real Madrid has been a dominant force in European football over the past decade, claiming five of the last ten Champions League titles.
Al Hilal earned their spot in the competition by winning the AFC Champions League in 2021 and will aim to exploit any vulnerabilities in Madrid’s lineup.
