Real Madrid’s manager Carlo Ancelotti commended his team’s resilience following a gritty 1-0 victory against Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, a win that keeps their LaLiga title aspirations intact while serving as a strong response to their Champions League elimination.
A late goal from Federico Valverde ensured the defending Spanish champions remained competitive in the league, lifting them to 69 points in second place, four points adrift of league leaders Barcelona.
“Valverde was crucial, scoring the goal,” Ancelotti stated to the media. “The team performed well. We were a bit sluggish in the first half, but we found our rhythm in the second half across the board. We aimed to win and bounce back after our Champions League exit.
“It was a solid match. We were aggressive and managed not to concede. We were more organised and played cohesively as a unit.“
Real Madrid appeared lacklustre in the initial half but improved significantly after the break, with midfielder Jude Bellingham adopting a false nine role.
“We controlled the first half, feeling no pressure from Athletic, yet we failed to create chances,” Ancelotti remarked.
“(Bellingham as a false nine) was advantageous for us last year. We didn’t quite utilise it in the first half, but we did in the latter half. We launched many attacks from the flanks, and he was there to finish. He deserved that goal.“
Ancelotti also highlighted Vinicius Jr’s performance, noting he was vital in their success, having a goal ruled out late in the second half and spearheading the attack in place of the suspended Kylian Mbappe.
“Vinicius showcased a fantastic attitude and was worn out by the second half. He was influential, as always,” the Italian coach added.
“These past few days haven’t been easy for him, but I was pleased with his response. He’s going to be incredibly important in the upcoming matches, given what he brings to the pitch and his mentality.“
With the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona approaching, Ancelotti dismissed notions that his starting XI was a trial for that encounter, asserting that the victory will provide valuable momentum leading into next week’s Clasico.
“This lineup aimed for greater control with Luka (Modric) and Dani Ceballos,” he explained. “We have plenty of time to prepare. The win is beneficial for us.“
