Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid is uncertain for their inaugural Club World Cup match against Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal on Wednesday, having missed training on Tuesday due to illness.
Sources within the club have informed Reuters that Mbappe woke up with a significant fever. Although he hasn’t been officially ruled out, the source indicated that his participation in the match at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium is in “more than reasonable doubt”.
If Mbappe is unavailable, newly-appointed Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso will face a tough choice, as the French star is currently the squad’s only recognised centre forward.
Another option, Brazilian teenager Endrick, was excluded from the travelling squad due to a leg muscle injury he picked up during Real’s LaLiga game against Sevilla last month.
This season, Mbappe has been a key player for Real Madrid, netting 31 LaLiga goals since his high-profile transfer from Paris St Germain in the summer.
Real Madrid enters the tournament as one of the frontrunners, having dominated European football over the past decade, securing five of the last ten Champions League titles.
Al-Hilal made their way into the competition by winning the AFC Champions League in 2021 and will be keen to exploit any vulnerabilities in Madrid’s squad.
