A harsh tackle that resulted in Kylian Mbappe being sent off during Real Madrid’s 1-0 LaLiga victory over Deportivo Alaves on Sunday stemmed from a series of minor fouls against the French forward, according to assistant coach Davide Ancelotti.
Before half-time, Real found themselves down to ten men when Mbappe received a straight red card for his challenge on Alaves midfielder Antonio Blanco. This decision followed the referee’s review of the situation with VAR, leading to the overturning of the initial yellow card.
“Kylian is by no means a violent player; he’s a genuine person who has expressed remorse and understands the error he made,” Ancelotti commented during a press conference.
“It was undoubtedly a clear red card, and he must bear the consequences for it.
“It’s evident that the numerous small fouls against him contributed to his reaction, which was clearly the wrong response. While I won’t excuse his actions, this buildup likely influenced what transpired.”
Real Madrid, who will face Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday following a 3-0 defeat in the first leg, were in need of a morale boost. This came when Eduardo Camavinga scored with a sublime curled effort in the 34th minute.
Despite this lead, the visitors faced a tough contest against the relegation-threatened Alaves, who created more opportunities, including shots on target, and enjoyed greater possession in the second half. The resolute Real defence worked tirelessly to maintain their slender advantage.
Alaves also found themselves down to ten men in the 70th minute when Real substitute Vinicius Jr fell victim to a reckless challenge from Manu Sanchez, resulting in his dismissal.
“This victory instills confidence in us,” Ancelotti remarked. “We were aware that it would not be an easy match. The circumstances of the game made it slightly more challenging for us, but securing the win provides us with the confidence we need ahead of Wednesday.”
Davide Ancelotti, son of head coach Carlo Ancelotti, took charge of the team at Alaves as his father was serving a suspension after receiving his fifth yellow card during the defeat to Valencia the previous weekend.
