Brazilian forward Raphinha has added some extra heat to the much-anticipated World Cup qualifying match against Argentina on Tuesday, boldly asserting that he intends to score and implying the encounter between these fierce rivals might take a more combative turn than expected.
“We’re out to dominate them… No question! We’ll take it to them! On the field and off if need be,” Raphinha declared in an interview on ‘Romario TV’ with the Brazilian legend.
“I’m definitely going to score against Argentina. I’m heading in with all I’ve got…”
Raphinha’s remarks have sparked significant controversy in Argentina, with local outlets labelling his “harsh words” as a veiled threat. However, Argentina’s manager Lionel Scaloni downplayed the long-standing rivalry with Brazil, opting not to escalate tensions further.
“We’re warriors on the pitch, but good mates off it,” he remarked at a press conference on Monday.
“I didn’t delve deeply into the players’ comments but I’m aware of them. Argentina vs Brazil is a crucial match, yet it’s still just a football game. It shouldn’t go beyond that.
“I recall the image of Leo (Messi) and Neymar after the Copa America final on the steps of the Maracana – that’s the image we should hold onto.
“The best player in the world and arguably the second best, just enjoying friendship together. That’s the image we need to focus on.
“It’s simply a football match that we both aspire to win. We all have Brazilian mates; I know many, and it shouldn’t escalate beyond that. We don’t need to overthink it.”

The match at El Monumental in Buenos Aires marks Raphinha’s first visit to Argentina since 2021 when he suffered an elbow injury to the mouth from defender Nicolas Otamendi, requiring five stitches.
Brazil have not triumphed over Argentina in six years, a streak that has extended to 16 years for matches held in Argentina. The hosts currently sit atop the South American qualifying standings with 28 points, six clear of second-placed Ecuador and seven ahead of Brazil in third.
Should Bolivia fail to defeat Uruguay in the earlier match on Tuesday, Argentina will secure a position at the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada with four games still to play. Alternatively, they can seal qualification with a draw against Brazil.
The top six teams qualify directly for the tournament.
