Scottish club Rangers have condemned the actions of a small group of their supporters as “embarrassing”, following a UEFA charge related to incidents during last week’s Europa League last-16 triumph over Fenerbahce at Ibrox.
On Wednesday, Rangers confirmed that they were facing serious repercussions after UEFA characterised a “racist and/or discriminatory banner” displayed by a section of fans.
The offensive banner bore the words “Keep woke foreign ideologies out. Defend Europe”.
While the club acknowledged the enthusiasm of their fanbase in an official statement, they also stated: “It is, however, profoundly disappointing and frankly embarrassing that the club now faces significant penalties due to the actions of a tiny minority.”
“Rangers is a modern, forward-thinking football club, and we take great pride in our diverse playing squads, staff, and supporters. To be charged with such an issue in 2025 is disgraceful, and the contempt for those accountable will be shared by the vast majority of our fans.”
Rangers indicated that they are actively working to identify the individuals involved, and they will ensure that appropriate actions are taken against them.
“To be clear, if you do not believe that, in 2025, everyone is welcome to support Rangers, whether at Ibrox or away, then this club is not for you, and you should promptly dissociate yourself from it,” the statement added.
Rangers secured advancement in the tie on penalties and are set to clash with Athletic Bilbao in the quarter-finals, with the home leg scheduled for April 10.
The club has also faced charges related to fans throwing objects and obstructing pathways during their home game against Fenerbahce.
“Such senseless and criminal behaviour has no place in sport or in society,” stated Rangers.
