David King, a legend of North Melbourne, has raised concerns about increasing tension between the AFL and its 18 clubs as the league approaches the 2025 season.
As AFL CEO Andrew Dillon and Executive General Manager Laura Kane enter their second year in leadership, King suggests that unrest may be on the horizon.
The respected analyst has identified a potential solution to the lingering issues, advocating for the AFL to connect with outgoing Sydney premiership coach John Longmire.
On SEN Radio last Friday, King remarked, “I believe Andrew Dillon and Laura Kane’s tenure is under scrutiny; I genuinely think so.”

King pointed to a rising disconnect between management and clubs, with all 18 asserting that their voices are not being heard by the league.
“It’s simmering away beneath the surface,” he noted.
“The clubs feel like the AFL isn’t paying attention to them.”
King believes he has identified a crucial source of this escalating tension.

The clubs are dissatisfied with the AFL’s decision to retain the substitution rule, which numerous coaches view as extraneous and detrimental to their strategies.
“There’s significant tension between the AFL and the clubs right now. Everyone I speak to echoes this sentiment,” he stated.
“They’re particularly frustrated about the persistence of the substitute rule. They feel their concerns have been overlooked.”
Although the AFL and the clubs may downplay any discord, King proposed an unconventional approach that could help mend the rift.

King continued, “In my view, they urgently need a figure like John Longmire (the former Swans coach) within their ranks.”
However, Longmire is not an immediate solution, as he has pledged to remain with the Sydney Swans in his new role as executive director of club performance.
King concluded, “They require someone who can facilitate communication between the AFL and clubs, as there appears to be an increasing divide.”
“I sense a growing disconnect is becoming evident.”
