The Premier of Queensland, David Crisafulli, has expressed his enthusiasm for the prospect of adding another NRL team in the state as the league continues to expand its presence across the nation.
In light of the recent announcements that both Perth and Papua New Guinea will be entering the competition within the next three years, discussions have begun regarding the possibility of establishing a 20th team.
While a second franchise in New Zealand has been suggested, there is strong support within the rugby league community for considering the western corridor of Brisbane as a potential location.
During an interview on Nine’s Sunday Footy Show amidst the Magic Round festivities, Crisafulli confidently stated that there remains significant opportunity for the growth of rugby league in Queensland.

“We will support any initiatives that create economic opportunities and foster the growth of the game. It’s something we are passionate about and will continue to champion,” he remarked.
“The success of the Dolphins over the past few years demonstrates that Queensland has the capacity to accommodate further teams, and this is evident for all to see.”

“I’m aware that the NRL is engaging in discussions regarding teams in PNG and the western regions, but we are prepared and enthusiastic about supporting growth in Queensland.”
Plans are in motion to expand to a 20-team competition by the 2032 Brisbane Olympics, potentially bolstering Queensland’s chances for a new team.

Crisafulli was also asked about the significance of Magic Round for the region, expressing a desire for the event to remain at Suncorp Stadium for the long term.
“Economically, it’s incredibly impactful, but from a social perspective, its influence is even greater,” he noted.
“Walking down Caxton Street and witnessing its vibrant atmosphere with various pop-up venues is worth more than $50 million to us.”
“Magic Round is a highlight on the calendar, and we are eager to ensure it remains here for good. It simply cannot be duplicated elsewhere.”
“There’s a unique essence to Magic Round here in Queensland.”
