The Premier League has expressed its deep shock at the racial abuse directed towards Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana on social media following his team’s 1-0 loss to Arsenal on Sunday.
Wesley, a 24-year-old French international, shared screenshots of the racist messages on his Instagram story, stating that “stupidity and cruelty can no longer hide.”
“The Premier League is appalled by the abuse directed at Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana after their match with Arsenal. We stand firmly behind Wesley and the club,” read a statement from the Premier League.
“We collaborate with social media platforms and authorities to ensure that those found guilty of such abuse face severe consequences.”
On Monday, Fofana emphasised the need for social media platforms to take urgent action against online abuse.
“This issue extends beyond football; it’s not merely a ‘game’ when some individuals perceive their skin colour as a means of superiority,” he remarked. “It’s time for change, for platforms to take measures, and for everyone to accept responsibility.”
Chelsea voiced their disgust at the “recent surge of online racial abuse directed at our players,” affirming that such behaviour would not be tolerated.
