Under pressure Tottenham coach Ange Postecoglou declared that Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt, which propelled his team into the Europa League semi-finals, demonstrated that his players still believe in his approach.
The club’s worst league campaign in decades had put the manager in a precarious position, with speculation mounting that his job could be on the line based on the outcome of Thursday’s match.
However, in a performance that has been rare this season, Spurs exhibited resilience and maintained control of the game after taking a 1-0 lead shortly before half-time through a penalty converted by Dominic Solanke.
Despite frequently hinting at his potential exit in recent weeks, Postecoglou affirmed that both he and the squad remained confident they were progressing positively.
“Our supporters have endured a tough period. I hope this gives them something to look forward to,” Postecoglou remarked following the match.
“I’m still the same coach I was yesterday. The players have never wavered in their belief. There are those who enjoy undermining my successes, but I’ll leave that aside.”
Tottenham are set to clash with Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals, while Manchester United and Athletic Bilbao are slated to compete on the other side of the draw.
Goalscorer Solanke, who hadn’t found the back of the net since January, told reporters: “It’s been a challenging season for all of us, but now we have a chance to achieve something significant, which would be incredible.”
“On our day, we can take on anyone. These are the moments we live for—big games and intense situations.”
Solanke expressed confidence that his team was “100 percent” capable of winning the tournament, ending a trophy drought that has persisted since their League Cup triumph in 2008.
Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario stated that the result proved the squad was “definitely” united and supportive of their manager.
“Everyone has endured a lot this season. It’s been a tough one, but we’re still in the fight and eager to strive for something remarkable,” he said.
“The job isn’t finished, but this is a significant win for Tottenham Hotspur, for everyone involved—the manager, the players, the staff, and the fans.
“We take great pride in what we’ve accomplished and displayed.”
