Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou addressed the media ahead of their Europa League showdown with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Following a disappointing exit in the EFL Cup semi-finals against Liverpool, an FA Cup elimination at the hands of Aston Villa, and the lack of a Premier League title challenge, the focus has shifted squarely to the Europa League as a potential saviour for Spurs’ season. Postecoglou remains optimistic about clinching silverware within his two-year tenure as he updated reporters on team news.
“Everyone is fit from the weekend in terms of physical condition,” the Tottenham boss remarked.
“It’s a positive situation for us, particularly given the limited occasions we’ve had this year.”
Moving on, Postecoglou addressed the ongoing speculation about his future and acknowledged that even in success, there will be cynicism about the club.
“I feel we’re at a stage where everything positive we do tends to be framed with a glass-half-empty perspective.
“I joined this club with a specific aim of revitalising a squad that seemed to be nearing the end of its cycle. Whatever chatter there is now or might come, it shouldn’t deter my commitment. My entire professional journey has been shaped by overcoming challenges.”
He highlighted the significance of home support as they gear up for their Europa League encounter, aiming for a spot in the semi-finals.
“It’s absolutely crucial. In every European match, whether it’s from last night or tonight, the atmosphere plays a vital role. It’s a defining aspect of European football. Successful teams often thrive on the back of a strong home crowd.
“We aim to recreate that tomorrow night. We wish to engage our supporters once again.
“Our home atmosphere has been vibrant this year. European nights have been lively, and the performance against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final was memorable. We need to replicate that energy once more.”
“It’s a critical factor in giving the club an edge in what are typically closely contested matches.”
Postecoglou further reflected on Thursday night’s rivals, urging fans to savour moments like these that don’t come around often.
“I’m not entirely sure how frequently the club has reached the quarter-finals of a European competition, but every time it happens, it should never be taken for granted. We must seize the opportunity.”
“Tomorrow’s match is going to be challenging. Frankfurt are a solid team and are performing well in the Bundesliga. They possess a blend of promising young talent along with experienced players.”
“It’s going to be a formidable test but this is what you anticipate when reaching the final eight in European tournaments.”
Lastly, he commented on the incident involving Brennan Johnson and Mathys Tel during the penalty situation against Southampton at the weekend.
“We scored, and we won. I’m thrilled about that. It’s remarkable. If we’re leading 2-1 and awarded a penalty in the dying moments, I want our most competent penalty taker to step up.
“One criticism of this club has been a lack of a winning mentality. The mentality in critical moments is to convert opportunities. We scored, yet somehow, in this alternate universe, everything Tottenham-related seems negative.
“Regardless, I was genuinely pleased and proud of how the players managed the situation.”
