Poland’s head coach, Michal Probierz, stepped down from his role on Thursday, just four days after star forward Robert Lewandowski announced he would no longer represent the national team with Probierz at the helm.
The 36-year-old striker from Barcelona expressed feelings of betrayal and deep disappointment following the manner in which Probierz informed him of his demotion from the captaincy.
Lewandowski, who holds the record for most goals scored for Poland, revealed on Monday that he received a brief phone call from Probierz while he was putting his children to bed, only to find a statement regarding his removal as captain had surfaced shortly after on the Polish Football Association’s website.
Probierz had opted to appoint midfielder Piotr Zielinski as the new captain in place of Lewandowski.
“I have reached the conclusion that, given the current circumstances, my resignation from the role of coach is the best decision for the benefit of the national team,” Probierz stated in an official announcement.
“Holding this position has been the realisation of my professional aspirations and the greatest privilege of my life.”
