United States manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen to gauge how his team performs against Mexico in the Gold Cup final on Sunday, expressing that it could be their last opportunity to face significant pressure ahead of next year’s FIFA World Cup.
Both nations have successfully navigated the arduous World Cup qualifying phases, which usually serve to prepare teams for the prestigious tournament, and have already secured their spots as hosts.
Following the final, the US will welcome South Korea and Japan for a pair of international friendly matches in September.
“This is beneficial for us. It’s good because I believe this might be the final match we play under pressure, and it’s crucial for the team,” said Pochettino during a press conference on Saturday.
“Given that we are qualified for the World Cup, the matches that follow will all be friendlies. Those are unofficial encounters, and it’s essential that we experience a scenario—though not overly challenging—where we can feel the pressure and stress.
“The World Cup will undoubtedly revolve around handling pressure and experiencing stress. This opportunity is invaluable.”
The Gold Cup final is set to take place at NRG Stadium in Houston, located just hours from central Texas, where at least 43 individuals, including 15 children, have tragically lost their lives due to flash floods.
Pochettino commenced his press briefing by extending his condolences to the victims, stating: “To start with, I want to express our thoughts for the people in Texas during this tragic situation, particularly for those affected.”
“Our thoughts are with everyone there, and we stand in solidarity with all the families impacted by the floods.”
