Leeds United are poised for promotion to the Premier League following a resounding 6-0 victory over Stoke City on Monday, thanks in large part to Joel Piroe’s remarkable four-goal display.
If Sheffield United fails to secure a win against second-placed Burnley in the evening match, Daniel Farke’s squad will automatically return to the top flight.
Should Burnley triumph over Sheffield United, they will join Leeds in gaining promotion.
Having last participated in the Premier League during the 2022/23 season, Leeds experienced the heartbreak of defeat to Southampton in the Championship play-off final at Wembley last year.
The Yorkshire side, who have clinched the English championship title three times, are now almost assured of promotion after their comprehensive victory at Elland Road.
Dutch forward Piroe, who had been without a goal since late February, made a spectacular comeback, securing a hat-trick by the 20th minute.
Junior Firpo added a fourth goal, with Piroe—now the club’s top scorer this season—finding the net again just before half-time.
Though the contest was already beyond doubt, Wilfried Gnonto capped off the scoring with a sixth goal in the 59th minute.
Leeds had hit a rough patch at the start of March, managing to secure only one win from six matches, which had raised concerns about their prospects for the play-offs.
However, they have since bounced back, winning their last four league matches and may soon find their promotion confirmed.
