Rangers have terminated the contract of manager Philippe Clement following a 2-0 defeat to St Mirren at Ibrox on Saturday, February 22nd.
The Scottish heavyweights find themselves in second place in the Premiership, trailing leaders Celtic by 13 points, and were recently knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Queen’s Park.
In an official statement, the club remarked: “Rangers Football Club can confirm that it has parted ways with first-team manager Philippe Clement.”
“The club would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Philippe for his commitment and hard work during his time in charge.”
“Further updates from the club will be provided in due course.”
Clement arrived in Scotland in October 2023 to succeed Michael Beale and initially enjoyed an unbeaten start, which included clinching the Scottish League Cup. However, this positive run came to an end with a defeat to Celtic in the Old Firm derby.
Under Clement’s stewardship, Rangers secured second place in the league last season and were runners-up in the Scottish Cup final to Celtic.
A similar fate befell them in this season’s League Cup final where they lost to their Glasgow rivals on penalties.
Clement leaves the club having claimed just one trophy, with the Europa League now representing Rangers’ sole opportunity for silverware this season.
