League legend Phil Gould asserts that Ricky Stuart must take a leading role in a “reset” for the NRL following the Canberra Raiders coach’s tense press conference.
After a hard-fought victory against the Warriors on Sunday night, Stuart’s team had three players reported and subsequently charged during the match.
Tom Starling received a suspension in the aftermath.
In his post-match address, Stuart highlighted the contradiction of the game promoting aggression while simultaneously penalising it on the field.
“We need to be cautious about overly scrutinising aggressive actions in a game that is fundamentally based on raw aggression and passion,” he stated.

“This Wednesday we have one of the biggest events on our calendar (State of Origin) taking place, and its profile, culture, and passion are deeply rooted in aggression. I’m not advocating for foul play, as I stand strongly against it … but we cannot afford to indiscriminately penalise players for their aggression,” he added.

On Nine’s 100% Footy, Gould commended Stuart’s remarks.
“I was genuinely impressed by his press conference over the weekend; the match against the Warriors was complicated for many reasons, especially regarding the officiating and how it was scrutinised,” he noted.
“He addressed the characteristics of the players, the nature of our game, how it is marketed, the necessary aggression, and how the match review committee and judiciary approach these elements of the game.
“There needs to be a reevaluation of our understanding of the game and the essence of our players, as well as their style of play. Ricky Stuart should spearhead that conversation due to his profound understanding of the game and the players involved.”
“It’s a persistent frustration among players regarding their treatment from external sources and the upper echelons of the game they wish to play and the manner in which they do so.”
