Phil Gould has expressed his support for Wayne Bennett to reclaim the coaching position for the Kangaroos as the Australian Rugby League Commission considers options for replacing Mal Meninga.
Currently, the commission’s regulations state that the national coach cannot also serve as the head coach of an NRL team.
Nonetheless, Bennett’s name, the coach of South Sydney, has emerged as a possible candidate, alongside Cameron Smith and Kevin Walters, who are also believed to be in contention.

Last week, Brad Fittler announced that he would no longer be considered for the role.
Smith has previously indicated that the NRL has not approached him regarding the position.
On Channel Nine’s 100% Footy, journalist Michael Chammas disclosed that the commission is set to convene on Wednesday to deliberate on a potential amendment to the existing rule.
He noted that such a change is deemed “unlikely.”

When questioned on X about the eligibility criteria on July 1, Gould replied with his signature phrase, “don’t start me.”
On 100% Footy, he reiterated his stance when asked if he believes Bennett should take on the role.
“I see no reason why not. I truly can’t see why he shouldn’t,” he stated.
“I don’t understand the reasoning behind the policy shift; the top coaches, with the most experience, are in the best positions to do this role, so I can’t comprehend why they wouldn’t allow it.”
Bennett’s last stint as coach of the Kangaroos was back in 2005.
Following the conclusion of the NRL season, Australia will gather a squad to compete against England in the rugby league Ashes.
