James Tedesco delivered a timely reminder to NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley during his exceptional display against the Dolphins, as the annual speculation surrounding the State of Origin heats up.
Tedesco was outstanding for the Roosters, charging his way to 212 metres, including two line breaks, two try assists, and a remarkable 10 tackle breaks.
When Sandon Smith went down within the first six minutes, concerns arose about how the Roosters would manage without a key member of their spine.
Yet, it was Tedesco who rose to the occasion, providing vital support to rookie halfback Hugo Savala, which in turn caught the eye of Phil Gould.
“With their young five-eighth Sandon Smith leaving the field early, it could have created some challenges, but James Tedesco not only performed brilliantly himself but was also a crucial presence for young Hugo Savala … he was there to support him, guide him, and always seemed to be in the right place,” Gould remarked on Nine.
“His individual performance was nothing short of extraordinary. An absolutely brilliant game from the captain tonight.”
Now, Tedesco’s name is set to be frequently mentioned when discussing the Blues’ fullback role, although it would take an extraordinary effort to shift Dylan Edwards from that position, regardless of Penrith’s sluggish start to the season.

The Roosters fullback refrained from making any predictions about wearing the No. 1 jersey.

“I’ve experienced this on the opposite side for years; when you’re the incumbent, everyone chats about other players’ form. Personally, I haven’t dwelled on it too much,” he told Nine’s Danika Mason.
“I’ve been concentrating on my game and doing my bit for the Roosters, trying to lead by example. I don’t foresee many changes being made, which has allowed me to mentally free myself up to just play footy and enjoy it.”
Tedesco acknowledged that this time of year carries added pressure compared to other periods in the season.
“For the years I was always the fullback, there was always discussion about players in form or positions, particularly within the spine. It’s the most talked-about topic as we approach Origin,” he reflected.
“Having felt that pressure previously, I’ve decided not to let it weigh on me this time; it’s Dylan’s spot, and I’m simply focusing on my game.”
