Manchester City’s skipper, Kevin de Bruyne, has returned to his impressive form, as stated by manager Pep Guardiola, following the midfielder’s pivotal role in the 5-2 comeback triumph against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday. De Bruyne not only scored but also assisted in two other goals.
Guardiola noted that the Belgian playmaker, netting his first league goal since December, had exhibited outstanding performances in numerous matches before a hamstring injury necessitated surgery in August 2023, sidelining him until January 2024.
“Sadly, he has been unable to perform lately because of his injury issues, following a long year out, surgery, and so forth. But he was fantastic today and helped us shift the momentum, which was wobbly,” Guardiola commented to the press.
The Spanish manager also commended his squad for adhering to the game plan, especially after falling 2-0 behind within the first 21 minutes, and managing to rally back under challenging circumstances.
“We require points to secure Champions League qualification, so this win was incredibly significant,” he remarked.
City currently sits in fourth place in the standings, two points ahead of Chelsea and Newcastle United, both of whom have games in hand, as they aim to finish in the top five to guarantee a spot in next season’s Champions League.
The reigning league champions are also progressing to the FA Cup semi-finals, where they will face Nottingham Forest later this month at Wembley, and are set to participate in the Club World Cup beginning in June.
“If our performance matched what we displayed today, we would be in contention with the top teams. However, the team has struggled to play to its potential, lacking the energy typical of this group of players,” Guardiola added.
“But it’s normal for some seasons to be like this. You learn, and you try to minimise the damage as soon as possible, aiming to qualify for Europe next season, pursue the FA Cup, and prepare for the (Club) World Cup.”
