Barcelona midfielder Pedri has stated that this season, he prioritises team success over individual recognition, expressing that he would only celebrate winning the Ballon d’Or if it follows his team’s triumph in the Champions League and the accomplishment of a treble.
The Catalan giants are currently enjoying an impressive unbeaten streak of 18 matches across all competitions, which has propelled them to the summit of LaLiga, advanced them to the Champions League quarter-finals, and secured their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.
“I would prefer to clinch the treble rather than the Ballon d’Or. Should the Ballon d’Or come my way, I hope it coincides with our collective achievements,” he shared with local reporters on Monday.
“Receiving a nomination is a fantastic honour, but winning titles is what truly matters to me. We are at a critical juncture where everything is on the line. You can lose three games and be out of contention for all three trophies.”
At just 22, Pedri emphasised the importance of facing challenges boldly and expressed his eagerness for a potential Champions League final against their arch-rivals Real Madrid, should both teams progress that far.
“We need to continue relishing these matches to achieve the best results. I would definitely welcome a Champions League final against Real Madrid – it would signify that we’ve made it,” he remarked.
“Fear of any opponent is not an option.”
