Palmeiras’ head coach Abel Ferreira is banking on teenage prodigy Estevao Willian to deliver a stunning farewell performance for the Brazilian side, as they face his soon-to-be club Chelsea in the Club World Cup quarter-final on Friday.
The 18-year-old winger will officially depart Palmeiras following the tournament in the United States, having secured a lucrative transfer deal to Chelsea that was finalised over a year ago.
Hailing from Sao Paulo, the team is optimistic that playing against his future employers will serve as additional motivation for Estevao to shine at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
“I don’t discuss the transfer with him, but he understands what’s at stake for tomorrow’s match, and I hope he puts forth his utmost effort for the Chelsea owners,” Ferreira remarked to the media.
“They view him as a talented player with significant potential. This is his chance to demonstrate just how good he can be, and all I ask from him is to give everything he has—attack, defend, and perhaps score a goal as a send-off for our fans.”
Ferreira further noted: “We’ve contributed to his growth, both as a person and a professional. This could be a great opportunity for him to bid farewell with a memorable performance, and who knows, maybe with a goal.”

Palmeiras, who were narrowly defeated by Chelsea in the previous iteration of the Club World Cup final back in 2022, are eager to make a statement for South America against their European rivals in this competition.
Chelsea has already faced defeat against a Brazilian side in Philadelphia, having lost to Flamengo in the group stages, which might allow Palmeiras to enjoy more local support at the stadium on Friday.
Ferreira anticipates that the local crowd will rally behind his team, coinciding with the United States’ celebration of Independence Day.
“Yes, we are the underdogs, but this situation could work in our favour, especially tomorrow, as I believe it’s Independence Day against the English,” Ferreira added with a wry smile.
“We’re up against a formidable team filled with talent and youth, yet we have a dream, and we’re ready to pursue it with determination and give our best tomorrow.”
