Brandon Smith has opened up about his impending departure from the Sydney Roosters, acknowledging it was “a bit of a surprise” to find out he was no longer required.
The controversial player was seen celebrating earlier this week at Angus Crichton’s wedding while the Roosters enjoyed a bye in round 10 and were given some time off.
However, on his return from Crichton’s wedding festivities, Smith received news that he might be transitioning to South Sydney sooner than expected.
The 28-year-old had planned to join the Rabbitohs next season on a two-year contract, but indications now suggest that move could happen as early as this weekend.

During a chat on The Bye Round Podcast, the premiership-winning hooker was asked whether he had played his final game for the Roosters and confirmed that the sticking point for both rival clubs was a reported $40,000 remaining on his contract for this season.
“It definitely looks that way based on the media reports and discussions I’ve had,” Smith remarked.
“From everything I’ve read, it doesn’t seem like there’s much desire for me to stay.”
“The wedding was fantastic, I had a great time, but on the way back, I received some unexpected news.”

“It was a peculiar situation. My manager called me this morning and filled me in. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, and we still need to clarify a lot of details, including what will happen with my $40k.”
“It’s a bit surprising, but I’ll have more information by tomorrow.”
Signed as a marquee player for the Tricolours after moving from the Storm two years ago, Smith’s appearances have been hampered by injuries, limiting him to just 41 games.
The dummy-half also revealed that he spoke with coach Trent Robinson on Wednesday night, and although his exit seems imminent, Smith will still need to participate in training sessions.

“Robbo called me just before I arrived here,” he revealed.
“We had a good conversation—he was direct yet surprised at how quickly things have evolved today.”
“It’s going to feel strange going back to training, as I still need to be involved. We’re supposed to be training with the reserve grade side this week.”
“It’s not going to happen overnight; they’re not going to draft a new contract in a flash. So, it’s going to be a bit awkward.”
As of now, neither the Roosters nor the Rabbitohs have officially announced the immediate switch.
