NSW utility Connor Watson clinched the win for the Blues in the opening match of the State of Origin series, delivering an impressive basketball-style pass while being tackled by four Queensland defenders to assist Dylan Edwards in scoring.
As the Blues pushed hard against the Maroons’ defensive line during their third consecutive set at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday evening, Watson found himself besieged by Patrick Carrigan, Tom Dearden, Kalyn Ponga, and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui. Despite the pressure, he successfully offloaded to Edwards, who surged over the line, increasing the visitors’ lead to 18-6 with just seven minutes left on the clock.
The Maroons will undoubtedly lament several crucial unforced errors in the second half when they analyse their performance, particularly a calamitous last-tackle decision with ten minutes remaining. In a rushed moment, lock forward Carrigan ended up with the ball and swiftly passed to Daly Cherry-Evans, who then threw a forward pass.
