Benji Marshall has declined a request from the Cowboys to release his standout hooker and captain, despite having a year left on his contract.
As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, a representative from the Cowboys reached out to the Tigers with an interest in signing Api Koroisau to fill the vacancy left by Roosters-bound Reece Robson for the 2026 season.
However, both the Tigers and Marshall were firm in their response.
“Why would we release a world-class hooker a year early?,” Marshall questioned.
“We have absolutely no interest in letting him go, none whatsoever. And that will not be happening while I’m the coach.”
“Api is a pivotal leader in our squad, which is why he is our captain.”
The Herald noted that the Cowboys believed that parting ways with Koroisau would create salary cap space to aid in retaining Lachlan Galvin.
Marshall emphasised that maintaining Koroisau is crucial for nurturing the development of the recently re-signed standout, Tallyn Da Silva.
“Tallyn is fortunate to learn from one of the best in the game, allowing him to develop at his own pace,” the coach stated.
“Hookers typically don’t reach their peak until around 24 or 25, so there’s no need to rush him. Tallyn will have the chance to hone his skills, gradually increase his minutes, and potentially take over from Api in the future. But that’s for later.”
“I aim to do what’s best for the club, and keeping Api is in the club’s best interest.”
The Tigers are set to face off against the Knights in Newcastle on Sunday.
