North Queensland Cowboys icon and Nine commentator Johnathan Thurston has shared insights on his conversation with Ben Hunt following the legendary 2015 grand final.
Hunt’s infamous drop during the kick-off has become part of rugby league lore, a moment that is frequently revisited, especially with this season marking a decade since the grand final where Thurston secured victory with a decisive field goal. Adding to the narrative, Hunt is set to face the Cowboys in Brisbane tonight for the first time since that memorable clash.
In an exclusive preview, Thurston recounted the message he conveyed to the halfback during their on-field exchange after the match concluded.
“I reminded him that without his efforts, the Broncos wouldn’t have reached that stage. He had an incredible season that year, so I encouraged him to hold his head high; if it weren’t for him, they wouldn’t have even made it to the grand final,” Thurston shared with Triple M.
“He had his shining moment in Origin… who could forget that brilliant chip kick followed by a 60-metre dash downfield? One of my fondest memories is watching him race away, scoring in the corner, and clinching the series for us.”
“It’s unfortunate that the narrative often centres on that one incident for Benny Hunt, but when I think of him, I see a fierce competitor, a loyal teammate, a top bloke, and a dedicated husband and family man.”
“He has had a remarkable career, and with a few years ahead of him, I believe the Broncos are set for a successful season this year.”
