Adam O’Brien will want to erase this encounter from memory as the Newcastle Knights seek answers after being overpowered by a relentless Gold Coast Titans side.
Having started the season on a strong note, Newcastle struggled to build momentum with the ball against Des Hasler’s team.
Although they posed a threat near the Titans’ goal line several times in the opening 20 minutes, their efforts were quickly undermined by a series of basic errors.
With 10 individual mistakes and four penalties conceded, the Titans swiftly took control of the match, with Jojo Fifita drawing first blood.
“That is simply not acceptable,” Greg Alexander remarked on Fox League.
A penalty, a mistake, and a six-again restart allowed Jayden Campbell to showcase his skills, scoring in the 32nd minute.
The halfback surged past his marker, slicing through three Newcastle defenders to ground the ball. He followed up with a successful conversion and added another two points with a penalty goal after Greg Marzhew’s error.
“Des will be very pleased with their defensive setup,” Mal Meninga commented on Fox League during the halftime break.
“They are scrambling exceptionally well.”

Knights hooker Jayden Brailey gifted the Titans a penalty goal to start the second half before witnessing a spectacular try from Beau Fermor.
David Fifita contributed to the impressive victory, helping his team finish with 26 points, but Bradman Best ensured his side wouldn’t leave empty-handed.
“(O’Brien) is on the verge of exploding… the mistakes in this period, the execution, it has all been subpar,” Alexander noted.
“That (try) should have happened 15 minutes ago.
“That’s not the type of performance you want leading into a bye week.”
