Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi is currently in an induced coma following surgery for a severe abdominal injury, as reported by various British media outlets.
The Nigerian international was involved in a collision with the goalpost during the 88th minute of Sunday’s Premier League clash, which ended in a 2-2 draw against Leicester City at the City Ground. He was attempting to meet a cross delivered by Anthony Elanga when the incident occurred.
Awoniyi, who made the move to Forest from Union Berlin in June 2022, had just come on as a substitute for Ibrahim Sangare and had been on the pitch for a mere five minutes before the unfortunate event took place.
He received prompt medical attention on the field before returning to the match, although he was seen limping during the final ten minutes.
According to reports from the BBC and other British news sources late on Tuesday, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma after successfully undergoing the first phase of his surgery.
Earlier on Tuesday, Nottingham Forest released a statement indicating that Awoniyi had undergone surgery and was “recovering well”.
The club confirmed, “Nottingham Forest can assure fans that Taiwo Awoniyi is progressing positively following urgent surgery to address a serious abdominal injury sustained during the match against Leicester City.”
