Norwich City, competing in the Championship, have officially confirmed the signing of Croatian defender Jakov Medic from Ajax on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old Medic has inked a three-year contract, which will see him remain at Carrow Road until 2028.
While both clubs have kept the transfer fee undisclosed, reports from Dutch media suggest that Ajax has received around €2.5 million for the defender, who struggled to establish himself at the club.
“I’m thrilled to be here and to sign with this club,” Medic expressed on the club’s official website. “It’s a storied club with a great reputation, and I’m genuinely pleased to be part of it.”
“From the moment my agent and I spoke with them, I was excited that they were interested in me, having tracked my progress for a significant time. This is a significant move for me; I’ve always had a desire to play in England, so making the decision to join Norwich was quite straightforward.”
Promising start
Medic arrived at Ajax in 2023 from St. Pauli in Germany but was unable to make a lasting impression beyond his debut, which featured a stunning goal that was deemed Ajax’s goal of the season against Heracles Almelo.
During his sole complete season with Ajax, Medic featured in just nine matches across all competitions. He was subsequently loaned to VfL Bochum in the Bundesliga for the 2024/25 season, where he unfortunately faced relegation.
“There was little opportunity for Jakov at Ajax, which made it logical for both sides to explore other options,” said Ajax’s technical director Alex Kroes on the club’s website.
“At Norwich City, he will encounter an exhilarating challenge in the Championship. We wish him every success in this next chapter of his career.”
Medic’s contract with Ajax was set to run until 2028.
