Kaeo Weekes, the standout player from Canberra, saw a sensational solo try slip through his fingers during the first half of the match against the Sharks on Thursday night.
In a thrilling start to the game, Weekes appeared to ignite the contest by breaking through a gap and sprinting past Sharks fullback Will Kennedy.
However, following referee Todd Smith’s initial decision to award the try, the Bunker intervened, ruling that Matty Nicholson had obstructed Braydon Trindall in the play leading up to it.
Even Paul Gallen, a legend of Cronulla, expressed his bewilderment over the no-try call.

Matty Nicholson penalised for obstruction. Nine
“For me, that’s definitely a try,” he stated during the Nine broadcast.
“The leading runner is expected to target the inside shoulder of the opposition player, and I thought he executed that perfectly. While contact occurred, these things happen in the game.”

Canberra legend Jarrod Croker echoed similar sentiments during the halftime analysis.
“He ran on the inside shoulder, and there wasn’t much more he could’ve done,” Croker said.
“I thought the ruling this season would lean towards common sense, and honestly, no one was going to catch Kaeo Weekes in that instance.”
Both Hudson Young and Briton Nikora recorded double tries for their teams in a fiercely contested first half that saw the scores tied at 18-18 going into the break.
